I’ve often heard of blogging as a way to make a few extra dollars. It’s in a similar vein to being a youtube success or social media influencer. If you were there early on in the gold rush that was initial phases of many of these ventures you had a huge head start on everyone else. IF you’re trying to make it now its going to be a huge struggle.
Blogging in particular is like this. There’s many courses that will tell you how to how blog and that you can acheive great search engine rankings with only 10 articles that acheive 1200 words or more of text. I don’t believe that. I run a few blogs and one of them in particular has quite a few articles over 1200 words and a total of almost 400 articles. It has been online for 7 years now, and only just starting to see search engine traffic.
And lets look at this rationally, why should my blog that’s only been around a couple of years magically outrank a blog that’s been around a decade and has a team of writers and infinitely more content than mine has? It shouldn’t, that’s why.
To get traffic to a blog you’ll need to either have deep pockets and pay for advertising on either search engines or other websites. Or have massive social media reach that can drive traffic to it intially (ie: you push your blog through your facebook or tiktok pages) The days of simply marking up your pages to rank in google are basically over for all but the most embryonic feilds or neiches. Having said that, this doesn’t mean it can’t be done, it just means it’s going to be hard, and time consuming. Plus you’ll have to learn about how Google works. Depnding on how tech savy you are you’ll need to learn how to use a blog such as wordpress (Not that hard) and learn basic photo editing and probably video editing. This also means you’ll need decent video editing gear and a good phone or decent camera.
This is obviously going to cost you more intially than it will make you for a long time. Be prepared for that. I blog for a few blogs and I’m only starting to see the combined effect of my social media and blogging starting to take effect.
I’m going to explore this in a lot more detail over the coming weeks so stay tuned and i’ll discuss in more detail what’s really required to blog successfully and what’s worked for me over the years. And what I wish I did differently.
